Abstract

The menstrual cycle is a phenomenon that brings countless changes in a woman's life, from childhood to adulthood. Having hormonal discharges as the main cause, these changes can have a different impact on each woman and may interfere with work performance, social interactions, and even sports practice. The goal of this study was to analyze youth volleyball athletes’ perception of their menstrual cycle and how their performance can be impacted in different periods of the cycle, as well as to identify the occurrence of premenstrual syndrome. Twenty-nine volleyball athletes participated in this study, from the Sub-16 and Sub-19 youth categories, aged between 14 and 18, members of a club within the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul state. To analyze the profile of the athletes, their perceptions about the menstrual cycle and sports performance, in addition to tracking PMS symptoms, two questionnaires were used. The first questionnaire, which was elaborated by the authors, was named the Menstrual Cycle and Sports Performance Self-Perception Questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 16 close-ended questions regarding the athletes' profile, perception about the menstrual cycle, and their performance. The second questionnaire was named “Instrumento de Rastreamento de Sintomas Pré-Menstruais”, which is the Portuguese language version of the Premenstrual Syndrome Screening Tool - PSST questionnaire. To record and tabulate the results, an Excel 2017 spreadsheet was used. These results were analyzed and described through calculations of the mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values, and percentage values. Among the results, 4 athletes (13.8%) reported that the cycle does not interfere at all, 6 (20.7%) stated that the menstrual cycle interferes somehow, and 13 (44.8%) stated that it interferes a little, bringing it to a total of 79.3%. However, for 3 athletes (10.3%) the cycle interferes a lot and for 2 (6.9%) it interferes completely, adding 17.2% of interference in sports performance. One athlete (3.4%) was unable to answer whether it interferes or not. The menstrual follicular phase was the most cited as a generator of interference in performance: 4 athletes (13.8%) described their performance as poorly, 3 (10.3%) described as very poor and 13 athletes (44.8%) perceived the interference somehow, bringing it to a total of 68.9%. In the other menstrual phases, the answers did not show any negative interference in the performance, as high values for “good performance” were found during the three phases: 44.8%, 48.3%, and 44.8% respectively. It can be concluded that the phases of the menstrual cycle do not greatly interfere in the athletes’ performance, taking into consideration that the symptoms can vary from person to person. Furthermore, it is suggested that further actions aimed at women's self-knowledge and their menstrual cycle should be implemented.
